bought this thing and had used it a few times, primarily for making dubs of edited videos...now the d**n thing won't even recognize a disc when one is inserted. Is this piece of c**p worth trying to repair ?

(I understand "Planned obsolescence"), but the d**n thing's hardly been used.

  1. Hi mcspikev,

Unfortunately it would probably cost more to have it repaired then it is worth. In addition Cyber Home parts are scarce.

There are a couple things you can try.

First unplug the unit for 10 minutes or so and try it.

If that doesn't work turn the unit on it's side and insert and eject a disc. Now put it upright and try it. Sometimes that will get them going.

Next see if you can visually locate the laser lens. If you can dip a cotton swab in alcohol and clean the lens.

If you can't get to the lens try a commercial laser cleaning disc. You can find them at WamMart.

    Good luck,

    Norm

  2. It could probably be fixed by a repair shop but is not worth the money as it may cost you more than the player's origional price to have an independent Electronics Repair Shop work on it (There aren't many left, but you can check the yellow pages).

Unfortunatellly, CyberHome DVD corporation is no longer in business, so you can't contact them for any help or repair info.  They were a company made by Hackers, and the fedaral government closed them down along with a bunch of movie studios/electronics companies which sued them.

(---busted for the FBI in mid-2006 for making DVD players without paying royalties to the patent owners.)

So, sorry to say this, but your cheapest option is probably to buy a new model from someone else.
