  2. We have used a cyber school for two years.

Pros:  I have the materials and objectives delivered to me.

I don't have to re-invent the wheel . . . thruth be told, I do alter the lessons a lot though.

If my kids have to go into the PS System, then they have report cards, etc. from another "school"

The money is spent in taxes, so why shouldn't they benefit in some way?

    Helps pay my online costs.

    CONS:

Ours says they have a social network, they don't.

Some of the school staff act as though the curriculum is the best thing since sliced bread . . . it's good, but not perfect.

Some HS families don't see what we do as true HS'ing

School can be intrusive in wanting work samples, testing requirements, etc.

My main reason of choosing a cyber school was to keep my in-laws off my back over the whole socialization argument.  It has worked . . . plus I did not want money not to be going to my daughter when it was earmarked for her education.

I don't know about slow learners, but I can say it works well for going faster and more in depth learning.

For folks who want the ease of having things planned for you, they are a great option.  For folks who are like me and don't mind the extra work and replan the lessons, they are nice too.  It is a good option for educating our kids.  (If you are counting on social outings, check with other parents, the school may not be as active as they say they are . . .otherwise you can look for a homeschool support group.)

  3. (this is our first year for cyber, but...)

    pros for my child:

    picks her own courses

works at her own pace (within reason--no falling too far behind)

gets graded and tutoring from certified teachers

has less than 20 kids in her (virtual)class

no wasted time in hallways, bathrooms, lunchrooms, etc.

    no bullies

    no drugs

no guns or knives to worry about!

    cons:

sometimes our internet connection is wonky

I have to invest a little more time to make social activities for her (finding, organizing, or getting her to them)

    *******

she isnt a slow learner, so I cant honestly tell you if its a better atmosphere for that, but my thought on it would be that it has to be better than a trad. school if it doesnt have a good program for those students.

She IS a bit lazy(what teen isnt? lol), and I do have to watch her grades a little closer than I thought I would have.  But I think if she did fall behind in a trad. school, she'd fall between the cracks before anyone told me about it!
