      During the Middle Ages, restrictive barriers were often imposed by, or dictated by the CHURCH, which in itself was in a tenuous battle with the Ruling forces.

       NO ONE was publically able to do anything not sanctioned, without risk, though thankfully many managed to.

       Historically, and perhaps especially the "DARK AGES" were what people in general, were finally able to escape from and overcome, in the dictated mores, in what was obviously extreme control over any freedoms.
