Question:

Cycle ride around Southern Ireland?

Hi,

Me and my friends are thinking of doing a cycle ride around Southern Ireland (probably the southwestern part). We wanna organise it ourselves rather than do an organised tour.

We're not hardcore cyclists so won't be wanting to cycle for miles and miles each day but we wanna see some good places in the area.

Any tips or recommendations for places to visit?

Or any good bike companies?

  1. Well first no country exists called “Southern Ireland” (you can see the question that was asked on this yesterday). The country is called just plain old Ireland (you can go ahead & call it the Republic of Ireland either). The south is a geographical area of the country, nothing got to do with the name of a country. Where the confusion probably is arising here is because there is a country called Northern Ireland.

Think of it like this: in the USA there is West Virginia & another state called Virginia not East Virginia. In Ireland there is a county called West Meath & also a county called Meath again not East Meath. So you see, much like calling these places “East …..” calling the country Southern Ireland is just plain incorrect & wrong!

This information is important so you can do appropriate searches on line. You won't get great results over a non existant country name! Bike companies would probably be the best way to go. I have included some links to companies below. Worthwhile doing it this way, then you don't miss anything. If you really don't want to do an organised tour you could probably just contact them, get all the info & then t on your own time frame.

    Good luck!

  2. Hi there,

Cycling in Southwest of Ireland - the Ring of Kerry will be your best choice. 114 miles of the best land and seascapes in whole of Ireland. Start your cycle tour in Killarney National Park then on to the villages of Killorglin, Glenbeigh,Cahirciveen,Waterville by the Sea ( half way) and on and on back to Killarney. The good thing about this is that you may stop at each or every second village along the way and check out the friendly B&Bs with superb breakfasts to set you on your way again. O Callaghans Bikes @ Killarney to hire and off you go - superb - jump in for a swim along the way and take a day out in Waterville stay @ www.oldcablehouse.com and ask them to arrange a trip to Skellig Michael a 6th century Monastic Settlement 15 miles out to sea, a must to go there.  A Bus will collect you and bring you back to the B&B. Any more questions just ask.
