Question:

Cycle seats for small children/babies + helmets?

I have had a child seat fitted to the back of my bike for my 11month old son, it is a standard upright seat that looks a little like a child car seat, comes up about 3" above his head and has a 3 point harness. The problem is when you put on the safety helmet - which adds about 2 inches behind his head, his head is pushed forward so he spends the whole time looking at his knees and gets very upset. Does anyone know of any flat back helmets or other options?

  1. I know exactly what you mean.

Most better quality seats address this by modifying the shell to allow  helmet clearance which is one reason I always recommend that my customers don't buy a cheap seat.

What you CAN do is get a 1" thick piece of neoprene foam... don't get regular polystyrene... and place it between the seat shell and the padding. It may take a bit of artful trimming to get it to fit cleanly and touch only the back.

Also, make sure the munchkins helmet is fitted correctly. Front of the helmet must cover the forehead- if he is looking straight ahead the helmet should be parallel to the ground... it shouldn't be fitted to the crown of the head.

    Good luck!
