Why do cyclists wear glasses even when they are on the velodrome?

another aspect is sponsorship deals.  some cyclists have deals where they wear them as part of a sponsorship deal.  also even inside there is often a glare off the wood track and a lightly tinted lense can help you see.

Some use a visor and it gives them a smoother and more aerodynamic profile. A lot of the races are won by tenths or even hundredths of a second so everything they can do to be more aerodynamic helps.

Try riding 30+ mph without some sort of eye protection.  Not pleasant.

Another reason...  I can attest to the necessity of wearing cycling glasses if one wears contact lenses..  It deflects the wind and prevents your contacts from drying out.
