Cycling: Luxembourg’s Kim Kirchen recovers from induced coma
Kim Kirchen, the cyclist from Luxembourg has come out of his induced state of coma. It has been reported through his team’s official website that he is recovering fast and as per the medical reports nothing is very serious or alarming regarding his health condition now. However, he is to stay in the hospital for a little longer, for further treatment.
After the seventh stage of the Tour of Switzerland, Kirchen suffered from severe pain due to a reported heart problem while he was in his hotel room at night. He was immediately taken to the Zurich University Clinic, for further medical investigation. For the last five days he has undergone several medical checkups and treatments to ensure that nothing was threatening his health. Yesterday his team officially reported that he is better now, he has recovered from an induced coma state and his heart and lungs tests are all perfect as well.
As per the reports disseminated by his team, Kirchen was able to recognise his wife and father immediately, thus the doctors are happy his mental condition is also perfectly alright. However, he did not remember the whole episode of being sick, since he went unconscious in his hotel room followed by the coma situation. Therefore, the first question he asked after being conscious was what had happened to him and where he was?
The 31 year old racer, who is primarily known for being a one day racer, suffered from respiratory problems earlier this year and after his race in the month of March he took a rest for one month as well and came back to racing after his doctors pronounced him to be fit enough.
The Russian man had his first race recorded in the year 1999 on the track of Dommeldange and next year he was able to claim the first professional victory of his career at the Piva Col Trophy. At his home town, Luxembourg, the race fans have loved him immensely over the years and thus he had been successful in winning the title of the "Luxembourgian Sportsman of the Year" for six years starting from 2000, he holds the record of winning the title for highest number of years.
In the year 2001, he left his previous team to join Fassa Bortolo. Later in 2006, his team Fassa Bortolo encountered some bad times and had to be demolished which led him to the T-Mobile Team.
At the Tour of Switzerland, in the year 2007, Kirchen finished at the second place and later in 2008 season of the race he was able to win a couple of stages as well at the same Swiss track. Also, in the same year he was able to wear the yellow jersey for the duration of four days during Tour de France. The same year he was able to bag the Fleche Wallonne victory as well, thus marking the year one of the luckiest so far for his career.
The luck of the man did not last very long as he had to pull out of the UCI Road World Championships , in the fall of 2008 due to his health and poor stamina problems.
Kirchen joined his current team Katusha, in 2010 as he was not able to make settlements with his previous Team Columbia-HTC to extend their contract.
Now, as he is still in the hospital bed his team as well as the fans hope that the cyclist will recover soon and be back to the track in a little time. However, there are rumours that Kirchen might take some time off from racing till he has recovered completely. His fans can’t wait to see him racing again but care more for his health and patiently wait for him to recover.
