  1. I would scratch the fish food idea because I am afraid it will mess things up, but I have never tried it.  Whenever I setup a tank I normally just use StressZyme and place a cup or so of gravel from another tank or you can get some gravel from a trusted LFS tank.  When I cycled my saltwater tank I used live rock, live sand and a piece of shrimp, but that was for salwater.

  2. no you can not it will mess it up by putting to much food in the tank

p.s you can use Eco.start by KENT freshwater

  3. Yes you can. Fill an old sock with fish food and put it in the tank.

  4. Yep, its easy! It is called fish less cycling. Once you have your fish tank up and running, go buy live bacteria and fish food. Add some bacteria and some fish food to the water. The fish food will rot and become ammonia, the bacteria will eat the ammonia, and will jump start the cycling process.=)

  5. Sure can.  Get your tank set up and running.  Put some fish food into a nylon or some kind of bag and drop it into the tank.  You can just sprinkle food on daily but it floats around and makes a mess.  You can also use a piece of raw shrimp.  All you need is something that will rot and create ammonia.

After a few days, measure your ammonia levels and keep monitoring until you get back to 0 ppm ammonia, 0 ppm nitrite and less than 20 ppm nitrate.  You may need to add new food to keep the ammonia fed as the cycle progresses.
