Cycling to work? Advice?

I'm thinking about riding my bike to work but I'm a bit intimidated....what tips can you give for someone just starting out?

  1. Leave early at first.

    Put reflectors on your bike if it's after dark.

    If your work doesn't have a shower then take deodorant.


  2. Stick to secondary or back roads if you can as they have less traffic.  Make sure your bike has at least front and rear reflectors ( although lights would be better ).  Take it easy at first ( especially if you're not accustomed to riding a bike ) as to not over exert yourself and give yourself some extra time so as not to feel rushed.  Bring a bottle of water with you as well.  

    Don't forget to check the bike over as well.  Make sure the chain is lubed, there is sufficient air pressure in your tires, the brake cables are in good shape ( if they are exposed, you can see if they are rusted or frayed ) and that the brakes are adjusted properly.

  3. bring chains... to hit the people with their windows down

  4. Find a route that avoids heavy traffic and run a practice run on a day off so you know if you can make it and know what to expect
