Cyclist should be given immunity within cycling, Danilo Hondo
Former Team Lampre cyclist, Danilo Hondo has suggested that amnesty should be offered to the cyclists willing to clean the sport from doping and ready to start over again, even if they have doped in past.
The cyclist also casted his vote in favour of the recent proposal by WADA to increase the doping ban from 2 years to 4 years.
He noted that a four-year ban shall be imposed to the cyclists using growth hormones, EPO, testosterone, cortisone or masking agents.
“Since we all believe to know how it was in cycling, we should check off the past once and for all. Clear, transparent and strict rules for a uniform anti-doping system, which will be monitored and managed by the International Olympic Committee," he told
DPA.
Doping has become a very sensitive issue in sports since USADA proved Lance Armstrong’s systematic doping, that helped him and his teammates winning several major cycling events,
The American was tested several times by UCI but even the sports organising body could not figure out what he was doing.
However, USADA’s detailed investigation into the cyclist brought him to justice, a 1000 page report along with a recorded testimony of 26 cyclists was enough to bring Armstrong down for the count.
Eleven of his former teammates including, Frankie Andreu, Michael Barry, Tom Danielson, Tyler Hamilton, George Hincapie, Floyd Landis, Levi Leipheimer, Stephen Swart, Christian Vande Velde, Jonathan Vaughters and David Zabriskie also confessed doping.
Hondo also raised concerns as to why WADA has only punished the cyclists and why they have not questioned Dr. Eufemiano Fuentes.
The cyclist spent three years with Team Lampre and has decided to switch to a new side for the season ahead.
"I will remain active in the peloton, but no longer with Lampre, You have kept me happy in the team, but it's once again time for a change. I think I need this stimulus," he said on Handelsblatt earlier.
The 38-year-old’s final home for the new season is not yet confirmed and there were only rumours that he might switch to the Luxembourg outfit, Team RadioShack-Nissan, which were recently confirmed by dpa.
