Question:

Cyclists, how many miles do you bike in an hour?

I've been cycling on my own for a little while (having just come off the crew team), but I only put in about 20 miles. I'm looking to join a team in my area (So.Cal), but I want to make sure I'll be able to keep up. I've been doing some running, some swimming, but I'd like to know the best way to condition myself. I have heard it's good to be able to go 35-50 miles at a pretty fast speed. My odometer (?) is usually at about 18-20. Any suggestions?

  1. This is from one of the largest cycling clubs in our area, I think you will find it helpful.  Almost all clubs I have ever seen use about the same numbers.  Sounds like you should start as a B rider but when you acquire some pack skills you will find your average going up. Search for bike clubs in your area, join one and have a blast!

The average speed listed represents an overall average for the ride. This includes stops, hills, bridges, etc. This means that the actual riding speed on flat terrain will tend to be 2-3 mph higher than the overall average speed. The average speed will also be affected by the hilliness of the route. New riders should be aware that the average ride speeds have a tendency to creep higher as the riding season goes on and everyone gets in shape! The club generally recommends that new riders consider starting with a category slightly below where they think they might be. This will give you a chance to get acclimated to the dynamics of riding with the group without over extending yourself on the first ride. You can then move up through the categories until you find the level that is right for you.

    Category Mileage Terrain Average MPH

    A+               30-100         Any Terrain 18-27

    A               30-100        Any Terrain         16-18

    B                 30-80   Any Terrain         14-16

    C+                20-40          Some Hills         13-14

    C                 15-40   Few Hills            11-13

    D               10-25   Mostly Flat          8-11

Note that the Average speed represents the overall average for the ride including hills, stops, etc. The actual cruising speed on flat terrain will tend to be a few mph higher.

  2. On longer rides of 4-5 hours, about 17-18mph, including stopping time for red lights, drink breaks, etc.  On short rides I can push 21-22mph if I really hustle.

  3. For a very fit cyclist like in tour de france they can go to an average of 15-21M/H. you really did quite good.

For my average distance about 14-18M/H only.

I think they are using special training so they can keep up that phase for a long time.
