Question:

Cyclists' massage needs?

I'm a massage student, & my friends are kind enough to let me practice on them. :)

I'll be working on a friend who is a cyclist. He's training pretty hard for a long race, & averages 200-300 miles per week.

I'm sure I'll feel the areas of tension, but wanted to do a little homework. Any input from serious cyclists would be wonderful! Where do you feel the most tension in your body? If you receive massage, is there anything your therapist does that you feel is especially beneficial?

I'm guessing hips & glutes, quads, & also upper back & shoulders from hunching over the handlebars so much (I get back pain just from looking at cyclists zipping around, not sure how y'all do it!).

Thank you very much!

  1. When I need a massage it's after a 100 - 200 mile ride.

My shoulders at my neck feels on fire some times and a good masseuse can relieve the pain in moments.  Then its my legs.    Quads and hamstrings that want to cramp up after the long ride.  Never needed any glute or hip work.   Is there a way to relieve hand pain?

  2. I had many as my ex was a MT. It's really is everywhere I needed a message. It does depend on the day though. While you'd think the legs needed it the most, with me is was neck, shoulders, entire back (Who doesn't need that) Glutes and Calves.

As a good MT you simply ask the client then try all major areas... when they say "Yeah RIGHT THERE" you're doing your job!

Hope you do deep tissue as you will have many more clients, especially athletes.
