Question:

Cyclocross with Shimano XT group?

I bought a used Surly cross check and would like to begin racing cross this season. I've been told that drops are the way to go, and I would like to try them.

My bike came setup with a Shimano XT group, Avid V-Brakes, Shimano 105 wheelset/Mavic MA-3, Shimano Thumb Shifters.. and thomson seatpost and stem.

Everything fits and feels great, but I'd like to try riding drops, and I understand I wouldn't be able to use thumb shifters with them, what would I need to change out?

Also, besides the shifters, any other suggestions for the bike? I bought it all for $625.. it's rideable, but could use a tune up. was it a good deal?

  1. Yes, a very good deal.

    I spent more, actually.

  2. Surly is out of Minnesota. They actually fab their own frames. $625 was a good deal if all that's needed is a tune-up. A thorough cleaning and a light lube will do wonders.

Drops will require different shifters (barcons and brake levers or a shifter/brake lever combo), tape, a new bar, possibly a new stem too. Oh, and the v-brakes won't work with the road style brake levers without a "travel agent" adapter. And while you're at it, you'll need to change brake and shifter cables and housings.

Drops = 2-3 extra hand positions & slight aerodynamic advantage.

I'd simply add bar ends and call it good. Get used to the sport. Have fun with it.
