Cyprus sweeps Ireland in 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship match
The first day of the final round of the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship – Small Countries Division took place on April 4.
The championship was being played in the Scottish city of Motherwell.
The first match of the day was played between the squad from Cyprus as well as Ireland. The match between the two sides did not take much long to reach its close as Cyprus was able to grab themselves a win by making a clean sweep over Ireland. The Irish
lost the three consecutive sets by quite a margin as the Cyprus team smothered their opponents.
The score board showed the following final set scores: 25-9, 25-7 and 25-11.
The key setter of the Cyprus squad, Kostas Kalafatis, suffered an injury in the match. The match which is next in line for the Cyprus men’s team is with Luxembourg. In case the Cyprus setter Kalafatis is not able to heal in time for the next game, the odds
will be raised against the Cyprus squad.
The first set of the match saw the Cyprus come out strong from the start as they were able to take the lead with the coming of the first technical time out.
After the two sides came back onto the courts, Ireland could not do much to make their opponents slow down in their onward march. As a result, the Cyprus squad was able to make a quick job of the opening set of the match at 25-9.
The victory of the opening set increased the confidence of the Cyprus squad even more and they were able to do a better job in the second set.
Ireland, on the other hand, lost their motivation as they let off their guard and got completely dominated by Cyprus in the second set of the match which was secured at 25-7.
The Ireland team stepped up their game a bit in the third set of the game at the beginning but before they could get their hopes high, the Cyprus team stormed ahead and increased the gap between themselves and their rivals in order to bag the frame at 25-11.
