Cyprus sweeps Luxembourg in final of 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship
The final match of the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship – Small Countries Division took place on April 8, Saturday.
The city of Limassol in Cyprus played host to the title match of the tournament which featured the teams of Luxembourg and the home team from Cyprus.
It was only an hour within which the final match of the competition declared a victor as the home squad was able to make a clean sweep over their opponents. The victory achieved by bagging three back to back sets was done in a dominating fashion as the Luxembourg
squad was not able to challenge their rivals significantly. As a result, each set of the match was won by the home team by a comfortable margin with the score board showing the following final set scores: 25-20, 25-16, and 25-15.
The head coach of the home team, Manolis Roumeliotis, expressed his jubilation on the matter in the following manner, “We were extremely disciplined in our tactics today. Congratulations to my players for their steady performance throughout the tournament.”
On the other hand, the assistant coach of the Cyprus squad shared his views by making the following comments, “The future looks good, as long as we don’t neglect it. It’s time to show that we have faith in our younger players and I’m sure they won’t disappoint
us.”
Apart from the victory over the defending champions of the tournament, Cyprus was able to get hold of the Most Valuable Player title. Not only that, three other individual titles went their way. These included Best Server, which was received by Eleana Petrou,
while Ioanna Leonidou got hold of the Best Server title and the Best Libero award went to Stella Constantinou.
On the other hand, the Luxembourg squad got hold of the individual awards of Best Scorer as well as Best Spiker of the tournament that went to Leah Dickhoff.
Apart from these individual tournament awards, the title of the best scorer of the match went to the player from Cyprus, Eleana Petrou. Petrou was able to keep the pressure on her opponents by scoring a total of 13 points.
