Czech Republic crush Angola 82-47 to book a place in the quarterfinals - London Olympics Women Basketball Recap
In a must win situation, Czech Republic crushed Angola 82-47 in their last game in Group A. The win for the Czechs ensured that they qualify for the last and final quarter final spot and ensure a meeting with France in the knock
out round.
The loss to the Czech meant that the Angolans failed to get even a single victory in five games and end their Olympic campaign on a disappointing note.
Michaela Zrustova carried the scoring for the Czech with 20 points to her name but the star performance came from Eva Viteckova, who finished the game 8 of 8 from the field to finish off with 19 points.
Nassecela Mauricio tried her best to carry the scoring for the African nation with 18 points while Nadir Manuel chipped in with 10 points.
The Angolans despite holding a rebounding advantage at 46-42 were unable to capitalize on the second chance opportunities they got from their 23 offensive rebounds. They were let down by their shooting percentage as they could
only manage to knock down 14 of the 61 attempts at the basket in comparison to the Czechs, who shot the ball 46.8% from the field.
After a tightly fought first quarter, a three pointer by Viteckova right at the end of the stanza gave the Czechs a 23-18 lead after the first 10 minutes.
A 5-0 run to start the second quarter saw the Czech prolong their advantage into double figures – a lead they did not relinquish and took a 40-25 advantage into the interval.
The Czechs came out in the second half with a 9-3 run and with the momentum on their side were able to take a 53-33 lead with 2:40 remaining in the third period. By the close of the stanza, the Czechs held a 58-35 lead.
The start of the final quarter saw the Europeans continue to pile on the pressure as they opened up with a 5-1 run. The Angolans got outscored 24-12 in the final period ensuring a comfortable victory for the Czechs.
