Czech Republic defeat United States of America 4-0 move into semi-finals
The United States were considered a strong force in the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World Championships this time out. If not the favourites, they were certainly thought of being a team that would give their competitors a tough time.
Unfortunately for the Americans, they were caught in the midst of a superb performance by Jaromir Jagr, who showed that he might have been out of the National Hockey League (NHL) for around three years but still had the ability to come up with the game changing
performances.
He played a key role in the team’s victory as he scored thrice during the game to send the defending champions, Czech Republic, into the semi-finals.
"We have great goaltending and managed to score goals", Czech forward, Jakub Voracek said. "If you get four goals, you should be able to win".
This win for the Czech’s was the seventh straight win for the team, as they moved into the semi’s and will be up against Sweden. The Swedish also came up with an impressive performance that saw them defeating the determined German side 5-2 in the end. The
Czech’s are only one step away from making their way into the Finals and win back-to-back titles since 1999-2000.
The amazing thing about the victory was the fact that the Czech’s saw contributions coming from everywhere on ice. Another one of the players in Tomas Plekanec came up with a superb performance on the night. He scored a goal and came up with a brilliant
assist that played an important role in the 4-0 win for the Czechs.
Ondrej Pavelec, Czech Republic goalie, also came up with a superb performance that witnessed him making 29 saves during the course of the game. The shutout performance put the team in the semis and the Atlanta Thrashers goal keeper was named the star of
the game.
Jagr was absolutely brilliant throughout the course of the game, as he was able to bag a goal in each of the three periods and put the Czech’s in a strong position. The 4-0 loss for the young US team knocks them out of any medal contention in this year’s
IIHF World Championships.
"The Czech skill took over toward the end of the game, and there's a reason why they haven't allowed so many goals in the tournament", said USA coach, Scott Gordon.
