Czech Republic prevail over New Zealand 70-51 – 2012 FIBA Olympic Qualifying tournament for Women
On Monday, in the game 2 of the 2012 FIBA Olympic Qualifying tournament for Women, Czech Republic saw off New Zealand 70-51in Group B.
Four Czech Republic players got into double scoring figures, with Eva Viteckova leading the way. Coming off the bench, the player scored a game high 22 points on a 5 of 8 shooting from the two point range and a 4 of 7 effort from
downtown. She also grabbed 6 rebounds and made two steals in the game.
Centre P. Kulichova erupted with 13 points, 13 rebounds and 3 block, putting up the only double-double of the game. Reserve centre I. Burgova finished with 12 points and 9 boards while K. Elhotova had 10 for the Czechs, who made
26 of their 56 two point attempts and connected on 5 of their 15 three point attempts.
New Zealand had a disappointing outing from the floor. They managed to slip in only 16 of their 54 deuce attempts and were nil-of-9 from the land of three. No Kiwi player managed to strike double scoring figures and J. Harmon’s
9 point and 7 rebounds performance was the best of the Islanders.
N. Taylor and L. Wallbutton managed 7 apiece; C. Lockwood had 6, while five New Zealanders managed 4 points each.
The Czechs stormed into the game with an 18-2 run inside the first eight minutes and were leading the Kiwis 20-6 after the first quarter.
The game saw four 4-0 spurts till the midway mark of the second quarter, with both teams sharing two. With 4:29 to go till the break, The New Zealanders made it an 11 point game and were trailing by the same difference with 3:59
remaining, but the Europeans closed out the half on a 12-4 run to chalk out an emphatic 44-25 advantage.
The third quarter was an extremely low scoring affair with both teams managing just 10 points and going in to the final 10 minutes of the game at 54-35.
The Kiwis matched the Czechs at 16 points apiece in the last quarter, mainly by getting to the foul line, but the huge gulf that had been created in the first half ensured that the Europeans were never troubled.
