Czech Republic rally past Germany with a comfortable 5-2 win - IIHF World Championships Updates
Czech Republic performed impressively against the Germans who were bombarded by goals and saw the Czechs ending the game on a high note at Bratislava, Slovakia, on Monday, May 9th. A 5-2 loss saw the Germans’ hopes of grabbing the second position in their group thwarted, but they have a quarterfinal to look forward to, along with Czech Republic, on Wednesday, May 11th, at the same venue.
Tomas Plekanec scored two goals while Jaromir Jagr ended his night with three assists. The win has put Czech Republic in a strong position in their group and this means that they will be facing the United States of America in the quarterfinals stage.
The offensive players played a key role since they constructed plays early in the game and later they were able to score goals.
Michael Frolik, Karel Rachunek and Patrik Elias scored the goals to put Czech Republic in the driving seat. The Czech goalkeeper also did a brilliant job, playing an important role as he made 37 saves during the course of the game.
The Czechs are one of the strongest teams in the World Championships this time around and from the looks of it, they are one of the favourites to win it.
They haven’t been defeated so far and the win meant that they prevented Germany from making it to the second spot.
It may be said that the win was not significant since the Czech would have played against USA in the quarterfinals regardless of whether they won or lost this match.
Plekanec scored the first goal of the game after receiving a superb pass. The puck was deflected from a defender’s stick to fly into the back of the net.
Germany came up with some strong plays of their own that saw them scoring and equalizing the score at 1-1.
However, Jiri Novotny scored once again for Czech Republic to put them back into the lead. The game was dominated by the Czechs from thereon as they created tons of chances and found the back of the net thrice.
The team got better with the passage of time and their play-making got better in the second period.
With some skilful finishing, the Czechs were able to extend their lead to 4-1 over the Germans. Germany could not respond effectively to the strong Czech offence that resulted in the Czech Republic winning the game, 5-2, in the end.
