Czech and German pairs secure the top slots of Technion Challenge – Volleyball news
The first Technion Challenge, which completed an amazing run from April 3-4, announced Czech and German tandems as the winners of the tournament.
In the women’s category, Czech Republic’s Lenka  Hajkova and Hana Klapalova sealed the title trophy after giving out a wonderful performance in the final showdown on Wednesday. Likewise, the men’s section was dominated by German pairing of Kay Matysik and
Jonathan Erdman.
Both teams created a whole lot of spark in their respective matches and secured the gold medals. The City of Haifa in Israel received good number of beach volleyball enthusiasts for the tournament.
Hajkova/ Klapalova came into contest with Belgian duo of Liesbeth Mouha/ Katrien Gielen in the final match and pulled off success in straight sets, 2-0 (21-13, 21-17). The Czech pair started out well and continued with success throughout the match. Both
players perfectly complimented each other and did not miss a chance to score points. Belgian team was irresistible in first set but did put in some effort in the second set.
Nonetheless, they still could not managed to beat the Czechs and accepted defeat at the end second frame.
Before the final match, American pairing of Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Hanson participated in the third position match. They were challenged by German pair Britta Buthe and Karla Borger. The bronze-medal match lasted for three sets and finally the Americans
emerged as better team. They captured first set by sending 21-13 on board but could not save the second set, which was won by German pair (21-17).
However, the third decisive set featured a head-to-head battle between two teams and ended with the final score of 17-15. US pair had 2-point lead and settled for 2-1 victory.
On the other hand, the men’s final match was all about FIVB Beach Volleyball SWATCH World Tour regulars Kay Matysik and Jonathan Erdman of Germany. In the final test of game skills at the Technion Challenge, they were joined by American team of Nick Lucena
and Matt Fuerbringer. Comparatively men’s final was more thrilling than women’s match.
The German and American pairs staged a close fight. The opening set of the match closed off with final score of 21-18, while success graced German side. The second set also came successful for German pair as they posted 21-19 and announced match victory.
In men’s bronze medal match, Martins Plavins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs of Latvia claimed success. They defeated Brazilian veteran Benjamin Insfrans and Alvaro Filho in two consecutive sets.
The Brazilians were tagged as pre-favourite team of the tournament but failed to live up to the mark. Latvian pair held them off for 2-0(21-15, 21-18) victory to complete the podium.
