Czech team to miss Roman Kreuziger at the World Championships 2011 – Cycling News
Roman Kreuziger crashed at the 215 kilometre stage 7 of the Tour de France 2011 and had to withdraw from the race as he was taken to hospital. The Czech time trial specialist injured his left wrist and was hopeful to make a recovery and participate in the
GP de Quebec and GP de Montreal in Canada and finally the World Championships.
Kreuziger had a good season and was looking ahead to represent his nation in Copenhagen as he won the Mountains classification and stage 4 at the Giro del Trentino. Earlier in his career Roman was considered as a sprinter but he has quickly developed himself
as an all rounder. His performances at the grand tours and other stage races where he has finished for the podium positions is a proof of his all round performance. His best performance of the year was at the Giro d’ Italia as he finished the Grand Tour at
6th position also winning the young riders jersey. He was with team Liquigas from 2006-10 and joined team Astana in the running season as he currently holds the 30th position with 135 points.
Roman has also missed the Vuelta a Espana 2011 which was the only true chance of preparation for the World Championships. He mentioned that his national team coach Rene Andrle has supported him throughout the recovery phase and has been in contact with him.
He stated, “We were in daily contact. He [Rene] knew about my problems and I thank him that he waited this long. I do not know if they will be able to have a sub for me or not, but until the last moment I believed that I could start."
The 25-year-old was happy with the recovery and was training for the race in Copenhagen but believes that he is not completely fit for the event. Roman mentioned on his website, “We have evaluated the circuit and it is very technical and therefore dangerous.”
He further added that there is a risk of injury at the World Championships as the track has a lot of dangerous falls in it and he is in no position to risk that. Roman mentioned that he would prefer to wait till his complete recovery and then return to professional
cycling.
