Czechs conquer Goerges/Groenefeld to lift the title – Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2012
Czech junction, Iveta Benesova and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, toppled over the local stars, Julia Goerges and Anna-Lena Groenefeld, in straight sets at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix 2012 on Sunday. They jolted down a 6-4, 7-5 victory against the Germans
to claim their first year-to-date title together at this WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Premier Mandatory event held in Stuttgart, Germany.
The Czech duo displayed perfect co-ordination and brilliant tennis to outclass Goerges and Groenefeld in one hour and 19 minutes. As a result, Benesova and Zahlavova Strycova pocketed their 10th title together.
"This is a big tournament to win as the field was strong, so we're very happy about it," Benesova stated. "We've had a great year so far, building on the four titles we won last year, reaching the semifinals of Indian Wells and now this."
"The week we had was amazing," Zahlavova Strycova commented. "The tournament is incredible and they take care of us so much. We can't thank the organizers enough for what they do for us. We had a really nice week here in Stuttgart."
Benesova and Zahlavova Strycova made a nervy start as they suffered the first blow in the fourth game and trailed at 1-3. However, they made a fitting reply and wiped out the proceeding four games in a row to leap to a 5-3 lead. The Czechs then kept their
serve once more and clicked the opener by winning six games to four.
The jubilant Czech tandem swayed from the winning path again towards the second set and lost their opening serve to fall at 0-2. Later, they exchanged two serve breaks and were trailing at 2-5 before they hit back to conquer the match. Benesova and Zahlavova
Strycova plucked the last five games successively and sealed the set with a 7-5 win.
All in all, the Czechs warded off three out of seven breakpoints they came across and capitalised on six out of 11 break opportunities to earn the fame. They also manipulated an impressive first serve share of 82 per cent as compared to the Germans’ 54 per
cent and availed 24 out of 49 points on it.
