Is it possible? The college that im looking at going into only offers D.O's and not M.D's. Is there any benefit to doing one over the other in terms of anesthesiology?

  1. The curricula in allopathic and osteopathic schools are basically the same except that osteopathic schools have an additional OMM course on manipulating muscles or something.  Technically, there is little difference between DO and MD in regards to becoming a doctor.  However, for the more competitive specialties like anesthesiology, your chances as a DO of getting into those residencies are lower than the chance for an MD because so many MDs who generally have better credentials also want those residency positions.  I'm not saying it's impossible, but having an MD would be more advantageous to getting to anesthesiology.

  2. DO's get no respect. I've never met anyone who could get into med school that went to DO school instead. The problem is when it comes to residency, it's hard for DO's to get popular specialties. Most are relegated to becoming family doctors. If you have your choice, go to any MD program over any DO program.
