  1. Strictly speaking, ammonia will lower due to bacteria in the tank. However, you will probably not have enough of the right bacteria in the tank to lower it *significantly*. A filter will contain more surface area for bacterial growth, thus providing more space for the nitrogen cycle.

Filter also have other benefits...disturbing the water surface to increase gas exchange (thus oxygenating the water), filtering out particulate matter before it decays in the tank, and providing a small current for the fish.

  2. yes, that's where the beneficial bacteria that gets rid of ammonia develops and resides.

  3. If the tank is small 5 gallons or less then no you just need to change it more often. If the tank is larger than 6 gallons then yes you do need filtration system in there for happy fish. Don't waste your money on drops to fix the water just buy spring water and that will do the job. You can also tell that the ammonia is too high because not only will your fish die but they will float sideways.

  4. Fish like it. It makes their water nice and clean. Also if there is enough surface agitation it helps with the dissolved oxygen. It also gets all the chemicals out because of the carbon. It helps house the beneficial bacteria you need to get rid of the ammonia. You still have to do weekly water changes to keep the ammonia down. Also gravel vacuuming to get out all the p**p and uneaten food. Also my ryukin, Jerry, makes love to the filter, he kisses it all the time and kinda sits by it.

  5. filtering the tank will not lower the ammonia and if you don't have fish in the tank do not do water changes either the ammonia is part of the cycle process next the tank will develope nitrite then nitrate and then the ammonia and nitrite will drop to 0

if you have fish in the tank do a water change 25 to 50 percent without touching the gravel

a filter will improve the over all health of the tank once it has finished cycling and will also improve the air exchange now so it would be good if you got one right away

  6. Yes you have to have filter to clean out p**p urine and all that c**p. And yes it will get the smell down and keep your water crystal clear. Good luck.

You will especially need a filter if you have gold fish they are the dirty est fish on the planet. But they are beautifulul.
