  1. If it is a Nikon lens, it will say AF-S or AF-I if it has an auot-focus motor built in. That is what is required to auto-focus with the D40. You can use pretty much any lens with it, but can only auto-focus with AF-S and AF-I lenses. Getting a lens with VR (vibration reduction) is really nice too!

I recommend getting a 50mm f/1.4 (if you can afford it) or if you can't, getting a 50mm f/1.8. Those are about the fastest lenses you can buy. However, they will only manual focus on the Nikon D40, so I recommend getting less expensive one. It is still amazing, and only $149.99

Also, a good lens to get, if you are on a budget, is an 18-200mm VR. This will auto-focus with the D40.

  2. How much do you want to spend on the lens?

they range in price from one hundred to five thousand dollars.

Where are you in the spectrum?

Well, if you're like me, and can't afford much, you might consider getting one/both of these lenses ( i own both of them with my d40 ):

That's the Nikkor 55-200mm lens, it's a really nice lens, you can see what i can get from this lens, right here:

most of them on the front page were taken with that lens. If you can go thirty dollars more, you should get the VR version, which is just a little over two hundred. This is a very good lens regardless.

This is the 50mm f/1.8 portrait lens, ' prime ' means that it's at a fixed focal length, so it doesn't zoom in or out. It always stays at 50mm's. However, with the f/1.8 in the spectrum, you can get loads of depth of field, for just over one hundred dollars. However, you have to manually focus with this lens on your d40 here's a picture i got with it:

  3. kenrockwell.com will answer your question.

    he loves the d40

  4. AF-S & AF-I lenses. Not very many prime lenses to choose from that will auto focus with your camera, but that doesn't mean they wouldn't work on the D40.
