DA Points and Bill Murray come out on top at AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am
DA Points topped the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am as he carded five under par 67 in the final round to post a total of 17 under par 271. It was the first victory for Points in the Professional Golfers’ Association (PGA) Tour in which he paired up with
Bill Murray, the “CaddyShack” star.
For Points, it was a dream come true to win at Pebble Beach. He has never had a top two finish in any tournament before. “Pebble Beach may be the most iconic place in America to play golf and to win here is just a dream come true, I'm so grateful to have
this opportunity", said Points, “To win on the PGA Tour, and especially at Pebble Beach, and especially with Bill Murray ... I don't think I could dream this up." Points earned $ 1.134 and got the opportunity to play the Masters for the first time in his career.
A brilliant eagle from 107 yards on the par-five of the 14th hole followed with a birdie at the 15th helped Points to get ahead of Hunter Mahan by two shots. Mahan bypassed nine players to reach the second spot, after carding six under
par 66 in the final round on the final day of the event. Second and third day leader, Steve Marino, started the day with a one stroke lead but after the triple bogey on the last hole he finished by pulling even for fourth.
CaddyShack is arguably the most iconic golf movie of all time. In the movie, Murray played the role of a greens keeper, Carl Spackler. Murray has tried to win at Pebble Beach for the last 20 years but could only successfully reach fourth place. The 60-year-old
comedian from Illinois, described playing the last few holes to be an out of body experience. Murray expressed his aim of turning professional after winning the pro-am title. The last celebrity to win at Pebble Beach was Kenny G, the musician, who partnered
with Phil Mickelson to take the title in 2001.
The spectators at Pebble Beach have always enjoyed the presence of Bill Murray. Some could argue he is the most beloved celebrity on the Pebble Beach Golf Links. There was a huge sound of laughter from the gallery this Sunday, when he was about to take the
shot at the 16th hole and his partner, who also hails from Illinois, shouted, "The crowd would be really happy if you could make that." Murray also enjoyed the moment, "I try to be funny whenever I think there is a place to be funny, and his being
funny on 16 was big, because the crowd laughed. It was over. It was done. On 17 and 18, we were buying ice cream bars."
A number of celebrities appeared during the four day event, including Andy Garcia and Cricket star Brian Lara. Pebble Beach has always been a favourite with audiences but this year it managed to steal the limelight even from the top three golfers playing
in Dubai.
