DA Points withdraws from the Players Championship – Golf News
DA Points announced his withdrawal from the Players Championship right before his tee-time at the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course on Thursday, May 10, 2012.
According to the PGA officials, they were not informed by the decision of Points’s withdrawal until six minutes after his tee time, 8:39 am ET.
Points later told that he started feeling pain in his back that forced him not to continue the tournament, as it could have done some serious damage to his back if he teed off.
In the meantime, Brian Harman was waiting for a call, as he was the first alternative for the championship.
However, it did not happen and the PGA Tour officials did not call his name to come and tee off.
However, he was later given a chance to compete without any group later in the afternoon.
The Vice President of Rules and Competition, Mark Russell, confirmed that he was scheduled to play the first two rounds alone because of the fact that his group was gone ahead of him.
Therefore, it was not possible for him to match his group mates on the course.
“It happened very quickly,” Russell said. “...we decided that Brian Harman had done everything that we had asked him to do, and at the time, he didn't have a tee time. So we re-assigned him a tee time this afternoon. He's going to play as a single. Then
he'll play in the morning off the 10th tee as a single”.
“We didn't have time to put him with his group, because they had already teed off and gone on to the second hole,” he added. “Very unique situation. I mean, I've never seen anything like it really”.
Points appeared in the Players Championship with a positive frame of mind, as he recently tied for the second place in the last week’s Wells Fargo Championship.
He and Rory McIlroy lost to Rickie Fowler on the first extra hole in the sudden-death playoffs.
It will be a major blow for his fans and especially the people who were betting on him because of his last week’s performance.
