  1. Wash them with a bit of vinegar in your wash with your detergent.

  2. Wash them again and then let them set in liquid fabric softner for awhile.  Preferably over night, but just a couple hours will work.  I've done this and it works.  You just have to watch for the rinse cycle and stop it to let it soak.

  3. They have to be washed again, add 1/2 to 1 cup of baking soda with your laundry detergent. Make sure they get thoroughly dry, I put mine on the highest heat setting in the dryer. Train your family that the towels MUST be hung up neatly after they use them to avoid this smell. Good luck!

  4. Re-wash towels in hot water with detergent and 1/4 cup of liquid bleach.  DO NOT use any liquid fabric softener as this will build up in the towel and make it less absorbent and more likely to smell mildew again in the future.  Dry towels completely on the clothes-line or in the dryer.

  5. I had the worst smelling red towels ever. I kept forgetting about them in the washer and they would mildew in there. Here is what I did: Washed them with detergent and 2 cups of white vinegar then washed again whith Gain original scent powder detergent.  Then I used Downy fabric softener. They smell great now.

  6. When we had damp mildew smelly towels the only thing we did was washed them again. There is no way that I know of you can get the smell out without washing them.
