  1. Maple syrup??

  2. I've visited London a few years back, and I live in Montreal, QC, Canada. I found that many of the foods are similar and there are very few local ingredients that are not also available in UK.

As another person mentioned, real maple syrup is produced from the sap of the sugar maple, a tree that grows mainly in Northeastern USA, Eastern Ontario, Quebec, and parts of the Maritimes. Although it is widely available all around the world, 80% of the maple syrup produced each year comes from Canada.

So although you may YELL at the people answering your question, they are right in stating it is an ingredient used in Quebec cooking that is not commonly used in UK, although it is not exactly "unusual".

Another ingredient I would suggest is a bit more unusual is cheese curds. In Wisconsin and surrounding states, they deep fry cheese curds and serve them like onion rings at some fast-food restaurants and truck stops.

In Quebec, we have a different use for cheese curds. We take french fries and place them in a dish, throw the cheese curds on top, then top the whole thing with a chicken gravy. The result is a dish known as a "Poutine". It has also been nicknamed a "coronary in a bowl" due to the amount of carbohydrates, salt and fat in the dish.

Hope this helps you until your friend David gets back...   ;-)
