The Major League Soccer club, D.C United are reportedly close to signing Charlie Davies from French outfit, FC Sochaux. The player will be brought on a loan deal, and the Black and Red officials are keen on the player’s medical evaluation. The striker has
recently recovered from a car crash incident and deal finalization depends upon a positive feedback from the tests.
The Ligue 1 striker is expected to show up in the current week for practice sessions with the D.C United, as MLS season is set to start off in March. Charlie will train with the squad, while DCU doctors examine his physical condition. In an official statement,
the team management said,
“The time period will include training and game time with the first team and a full medical evaluation by team doctors in D.C. Details of a 12-month loan have already been negotiated, but nothing will be official until D.C. United is satisfied he is physically
capable of playing at the level required to be successful in MLS.”
24-year-old striker has set numerous records in his youth career, while playing for Brooks High School Team. The forward went on to play for the Westchester Flames and Boston College Eagles.
Davies started his senior career playing in 2nd division league Superettan for the Swedish outfit, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Hammarby-IF-c39488. Although he appeared in the starting line up initially, the forward failed to impress the coaching staff and went down the pecking
order. However, 2008 was a great year for Davies at Bajen. The attacker scored 14 goals in 27 appearances and was frequently linked with a transfer, but a move failed to materialise.
The 2009 season also started off quite well for the striker; however, he was soon suspended due to a serious foul. This put an end to his career at the Swedish Football League, with the player moving to Sochaux, Ligue 1. However, only after 8 appearances
for his new team, Davies was injured in a brutal car accident. The striker ended up with several broken bones, dislocated elbow and femur, and a ruptured bladder.
The career threatening incident was a terrible moment in Davies’ life. It took the striker more than a year to recover from the injuries. Davies went under intensive rehabilitation, as he missed out on the 2010 World Cup, and also failed to make an appearance
for Sochaux during the 2009/2010 season.
Davies has only been able to put up a single appearance during the ongoing season for the Ligue 1 outfit; an exhibition match against Bordeaux. Even though the striker is yet to appear in a competitive fixture, the team officials were happy on his return,
letting him wear his kit. Davies was also allowed to enter the field as a reward for his rehabilitation efforts.
Playing for MLS would be a great opportunity for the 24-year-old striker after a long break. Davies seems to be confident about his recovery, and he is keen to join the Black and Red squad. The American forward, on a social networking website said,
"I'm very excited to meet up with DC United in Florida tomorrow. Looking forward to it & can't wait."
A stint in the less rigorous MLS will present the player with an ideal platform to re-launch his career after a testing year on the sidelines.
