DC Wade Phillips downplays concerns about Houston Texans’ recent defensive effort – NFL News
Houston Texans defensive coordinator Wade Phillips has refused to become concerned about last two games’ defensive efforts by the team allowing a higher number yards passing and touchdowns.
The coach believes that winning a game is important than counting on overall performance numbers at different positions, and in this regard the defence is performing at par with last year’s level.
Wade believes:
"It's a team game, we've won 10. It's about winning, it's not about the stats overall, it's about being able to win. Our team has learned how to win. We'd like to win by 21 points every time, but that's not always going to happen."
Texans have allowed 395.5 yards passing and six touchdowns in last two games, which is quite higher than their average in previous games, and some commentators believe the coach might look at the worrisome figures to seek an improvement overall.
Phillips said it is not the time to press panic button as they are still winning games, which, he said, is important for him.
The coach is credited to help the team’s defence become hit in the league since his arrival last year. Most recently, however, pass rush has become a worry for the team, especially in last couple of ties. Yet defensive end J.J. Watt is in the second spot
in the league with 14.5 sacks.
Defensive end Antonio Smith said of the situation:
"I'm proud of my boys, because each week, got to find a way to win, and we keep winning. But you can't just sit and act like the yardage didn't happen, the touchdowns didn't happen. A lot of the things we have not let happen this year.”
The Texans are facing the Tennessee Titans this Sunday (Dec.02) and there is a concern the team might be affected on the defensive position further because of some serious injuries issues.
Given the team’s strength at some other options, offence for example, they can ploy different schemes and strategies during each to pull off a win, and they have been successful in doing so.
