DE Marcus Benard recovers from fatal accident to rejoin Cleveland Browns -NFL News
Cleveland Browns’ defensive end, Marcus Benard, has for the first time spoken of his ordeal that he had been through after a motorcycle accident last year, which almost took his life, let alone the football career.
About seven months ago, Benard went off the field after a practice with his teammates in his three-wheel Can-Am Spyder, smashing into guardrail interstate.
Police disclosed that the player was dragged 80 yards before his vehicle stopped. He had to stay in a local hospital for three days to treat his multiple unknown injuries.
Now back on the field after having spent more than a half year on recovery and rehab, the player says he feels blessed and appreciates life more than ever before.
He said:
"I appreciate life. And I appreciate the sport that I'm playing and my responsibilities to it. It's a blessing and I feel like it's a plan. I'm very happy to be here."
The player also spoke to local reporters for the first time since returning from the injury and looked to be very happy indeed to have earned the opportunity of meeting the commentators and mediamen, who report and comment on his game.
Benard, who has become the limelight for the local media outlets since his return, was asked if he had learned anything from his ordeal or was there any change that the incident had left on his personality and life.
His reply was:
"It did. But you live and you learn from everything. You walk up stairs and you stub your toe and you say I'm going to pick my feet up this time. So I learned a valuable lesson, just the appreciation of life. I feel like it was a blessing and you learn your
lessons.”
The DE remains crucial to Browns’ performance and victories. He led the team in sacks in the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season, before meeting the accident.
Browns are also excited to have him back to the side and head coach, Pat Shurmur, said that he noticed a clear change in the player’s personality.
