DE Mike DeVito takes paycut as New York Jets restructure his contract - NFL News
The arrival of the 16th overall pick and defensive end, Quinton Coples, to the New York Jets after this year’s drafts has led to another defensive end, Mike DeVito receiving a pay cut.
DeVito who is in the final year of his contract will see less game time this season after the arrival of Coples and has now restructured his contract with the Jets according to a report by the
New York Post.
The defensive end was set to receive $ 2.26 million in guaranteed salary this season, but the restructuring of that deal has significantly reduced his earnings.
Now the 27-year-old will make $ 700,000 in guaranteed salary but will make a lot more through significant bonuses.
DeVito will receive $ 950,000 as a signing bonus plus $ 500,000 roster bonus and $ 350,000 workout bonus. He can also earn around $ 750,000 more if he plays a significant number of games this year with the Jets.
The restructuring of the deal shows that the Jets hope that Coples will make the defensive end position his own and deliver significantly during his rookie season.
Speaking to the media, New York Jets head coach, Rex Ryan said.
"Mike DeVito is one of those players that we point to. Quite honestly, when I was here, the first free agent we have ever signed as me being head coach was Mike DeVito to an extension. So it’s something I proud of and I know he is a tremendous player. To
explain his exact role right now, I don’t really feel I can do that right now.”
Mike DeVito will likely leave as a free agent at the end of the 2012-13 season as his contract runs out.
Picked up by the Jets as an undrafted free agent in 2007, the New York native has spent five seasons with the Jets.
His best season came in 2010-11 as he made 59 tackles as he played in all 16 games of the regular season.
Last year the defensive end’s productivity decreased as he made just 34 tackles in the 12 games he played.
The Jets ended last season with a poor 8-8 record which was a far cry from their last two seasons in which they twice reached the American Football Conference (AFC) Championship game.
