My cat had deadly breath also.  I was advised by a pet store owner to buy coconut oil (from a health food store) and feed about 1 tsp. per day mixed with his food.  It took only a few days to clear up the breath.  Sometimes the bad breath is because of poor digestion and apparently, coconut oil aids digestion, not to mention helps to eliminate fur balls and gives a nice sheen to their coat.  Coconut oil also has a shelf life of about four years and can be used in your cooking, or as a sun tan oil, so it won't go to waste by any means.

You should get the cat checked out by the vet because he might need to have a dental done.
