  1. Don't use completely de-ionized water.  Always use water with some dissolved mineral content.  If the concentration of iron, nickel, etc. (that matches the pipe metal alloy) is at a level (in ppm) that represents 'saturation' to the metals in the surface of the pipe, then little to no corrosion will occur.

    If the concentration of metals in the water is lower than the saturation level of those metals, then metal will be dissolved into the water (a form of corrosion).

    Keep the water clear of any compounds that would attack the metal surface (acids, etc.).
