Husband and I are visiting family who live in Detroit in about two weeks and want to eat in a nice environment with quality food restaurant.

Willing to pay $$ for a great steak.

Thanks in advance!

  1. The Steak and Seafood Co.

Its in Ann Arbor, about an hour away from Detroit though.. The food is amazing!

  2. Morton's Steak House in Southfield, MI

Coach Signas on top of the 72 story Marriott Hotel in Downtown Detroit  (not sure on spelling of name?)

Don Shua's Steak House (Miami Dolphins Coach) in the Marriott Hotel in  Troy, MI

    Carls Chop House, Detroit, MI

    Opus one, Downtown Detroit, MI

Rattlesnake Club, Detroit, MI (near old Strohs Headquarters)

Ruth Chris Steak House, Troy, MI  (never ate there but heard it's probably one of the best chains like Morton's)

If it's a clear day you can not beat eating on top of  the world in Coach Signas 72 floors up in the highest point in Michigan.  From up there you can see as far as the Silverdome in Pontiac, (25 miles) on a clear day.  Note: parking is free when you valet on the GM side (Riverfront side) of Renaissance Center.

Also, be aware that the restaurant is not owned or run by Marriott like the Hotel is.  The Coach Signas Restaurant is actually owned by General Motors and is contracted out to a private company that runs the restaurant.

So if you select Coach Signas on a sunny day, do not park you car at the Marriott Hotel garage or valet but instead with the GM valet on the Riverfront side of the Renaissance Center.

Another fun idea woud be to take your hosts to a Tiger Game at Comerica Park.  With one big exception.  Only get tickets if you can get a "Tiger Club" pass into the dining room.  If you have this pass, you and your ticketed guest will have a fine dining buffet in casual attire.  In additon, your sitting right on the glass windows of Comerica Park and either watching the teams warm before the game 5-7pm or watching the game from 7-9pm while enjoying a fine dining buffet with usually prime rib, a cook to order station, fine seafood, jumbo  peeled shrimp, various salad stations, and a desert station to die for.

Most Detroiter's and Tiger Fans do not know about the Tiger Club and  only get tickets if you can get a pass into the Tiger Club.  They have two sittings....5pm  & 7pm and you can sit and eat for two hours (more than enough time) then you leave so the next sitting comes in or it's closing time.  The Buffet is a flat $27 a person and like I said it's a great time.  Also if you can, try to go on a Friday Night,  every Friday night is fan appreication night and theres an extensive Fireworks Display immediately after the game blown from center field.

I hope this gives you some ideas for a fun time in Detroit.

  3. Harbor House Restaurant

    (586) 791-6070

34250 Groesbeck Hwy (just south of 15 mile road)

    Clinton Twp, MI

Dinners start at $12.00 for a single serving or you can order the ALL YOU CAN EAT: this is not a buffet, but table served cooked to order. You have about 11-15 different choice, and can have any of them you want, and as much as you want. Served with a plate of fried mushroom, an awesome salad, soup and dessert bar.

Their all you can eat crab legs includes all the above also, amazing.

My favorites are the London Broil served on a sizzling platter, the Chicken Montery, and the fried shrimp.

My wife and I like to go to dinner there, and right behind it is a Bowling alley with a Comedy club attached. Dinner and a show, it's a awesome night out.

  4. Big Fish in Madison Heights - great food.

The Whitney in Detroit is wonderful but expensive.

  5. Gaucho in Northville. It's a Brazilian steakhouse where you get as much as you want. It's a fixed price per person; $40 for dinner. You start with a fantastic salad bar. Then the meat action begins. The gaucho chefs come around with skewers of fire-roasted meat. All kinds, beef, ribs, lamb. I highly recommend the 'house special', picanha. This is a meat lovers paradise. You will love it.

  6. The No VI Chop House in Novi is a good steak.  The restaurant is inside the Hotel Baronette - out in front of Twelve Oaks Mall.  That's what I think of first when I think steak.

Secondly, I think of Carl's Chop House in downtown Detroit.  It's a classic.  Opus One downtown is a wonderful atmosphere too.

There's the Volare in Wixom that is good for steaks too.

There are also the usuals - Ruth Chris Steakhouse (Troy), Shula's (Troy) and Morton's (Southfield), and all of the Andiamo outlets.
