DFB Pokal: Schalke beat Augsburg
A late Jefferson Farfan goal gave visiting side, Schalke a victory in DFB Pokal as Schalke are through to the quarterfinals of the Pokal.
The Peruvian saved Schalke a Christmas present at Augsburg as Felix Magath’s side end 2010 on a winning note.
Coach Felix Magath said that he is considering extending his teams’ winter break in order to rest his players before the start of the 2nd half of the season before this match and he was rewarded for his consideration by Farfan.
The winning goal was the result of a long build-up play from Schalke. The visitors controlled much of the game throughout the whole 90 minutes but were struggling in terms of offensive prowess.
Summer signing from Real Madrid, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Klaas-Jan-Huntelaar-c21175 missed from close range. Michael Thurk almost gave Augsburg a shock lead just moments before Farfan’s decider but German international
goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Manuel-Neuer-c23424 made a superb save to dent Thurk.
With this win, Augsburg are now out of the competition as Schalke move to the quarterfinals of the DFB Pokal Cup where they might face Hoffenheim.
Dutch striker, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar was linked with a surprise move to Italian Serie A giants, Juventus during the January transfer window but he and his agents later on rubbished those rumours after the game.
Huntelaar has started the 2010-11 season strongly and has already found the net 7 times in 15 games in the Bundesliga and has even scored 3 times in 6 Champions League matches.
Schalke is currently cash strapped and the 27-year-old Dutchman is constantly being linked to a return to Italy.
But his agent denies that his player would want to leave Schalke and insists that he is happy in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904 as he is playing well and is scoring regularly which means that his manager, Felix Magath is happy with his performances.
Huntelaar has always had a good goal scoring record during his time with Ajax, Spanish side, Real Madrid and A.C Milan. After settling in well in Germany after his move from A.C Milan in last years’ January transfer window, it seems very unlikely that he
will leave the club where he is guaranteed playing time, something he seemed not to have in Real Madrid.
