I bought a 1987 19ft wellcraft 192 classic with a 165 mercruiser I/O. I bought it from my aunts friends brother. He just had the bearings and the bellows replaced on the outdrive. The boat runs as far as i concerned. He wouldnt lie to me and we had the ears on it and it started up. It came with an EZ Load trailer. I paid $1,800 for it. I'm very new to boats so i'm not al that famliar with their value. Is this a good boat for a first time boater and is the price i paid fair?

  1. As long as you heard the engine run, shifted into & out of gear, you did fine. Be careful, go out with experienced boaters to teach you. DO not drink & drive,,,

  2. according to nada.com you came out ahead by about $500 - $800 and that's not a bad deal.

low priced at $2350 and high at $2630 based on the boat having the basics.

welcome to the wonderful world of boating & enjoy!!! now, go take a safety course if you haven't already! : )

  3. Anything that floats and runs for $1800 is a great deal.  W/ellcraft is a respected manufacturer, and the mercruiser 165 is one of the best, most long lasting motors made.  Spend a couple of hundred dollars and have a good shop look at boat, and see if any preventative maintenance needs to be done.  Enjoy the water!

  4. It sounds good to me.

  5. Any inboard/outboard boat from a good manufacturer with a well maintained boat hull, good transom, solid boat floor, well kept upholstery, and well maintained engine and drive system is well worth $1,800.

As mentioned in the answer I gave on your previous question about your boat's performance, here is my experienced advice on this matter.

    Quote:

"If you had your boat properly inspected and the engine checked out by a reliable Mercury service shop, you should have little worries about taking your boat out for a spin. However, if you have not had it checked out by a certified Merc service shop, it would be a good idea to get this done 3 weeks ahead of time before you take it out on the lake. There's nothing worse than getting stuck in the middle of the water by not having a checkup on a used boat bought recently.

Also, if this is your first time owning an inboard/outboard boat, spend a lot of time asking a lot of questions to the Merc techs when you go to pick up your boat after getting a checkup. Find out what maintenance you can perform yourself, and what is best left to a Merc service shop.

Never run any marine engine without water flowing into its cooling system for any reason."

Winterization and Dewinterization of your I/O boat is 100% mandatory, unless of course you enjoy paying $5,000 to $9,000 for a new replacement engine almost every year.

In short, if you've checked the boat transom and boat floor for any soft spots or problems and have none, then all you need is to bring it to a reputable Mercury service shop for a complete inspection BEFORE you take it out for a family boating trip.

    Inspection SHOULD include the following:

    Compression test

Run engine, look and listen for any problem signs.

    Sterndrive inspection

Pull lower unit and check impeller and replace if needed.

check and replace lower unit lube if needed.

Don't forget to get fully informed needed boat maintenance and ask a LOT of questions about your boat.  You are paying about $85 an hour for their services, get your money's worth.  Most good service shops never hesitate to answer these questions and keep you full informed on maintenance needs.

  6. if the engine gives good service then its an ok price. if the engine goes wrong its mega bucks!

Always worth changing the engine oil on a new boat cause u dont know when it was last done! if its a 4 stroke of course!

  7. Well, if I said it was a lousy deal, are you going to take it back?

    Actually, not a bad price.
