Question:

DID SOME ELECTRICAL WORK AND NOW MY CAR WON'T CHARGE???

During the upgrade, I forgot to disconnect the battery... I know, I know; it was an honest mistake... I was moving too quickly and a bit carelessly.

So, I touched the positive bolt on my altenator to the casing and the rest is a "flash" and history. Thank GOD I had a 100amp Fuse in-between the battery and the altenator. Well, needless to say, that fuse was blown. I replaced that fuse and proceeded to crank the car and it crank up. A few days latter, it went dead.

I was told that it was the battery, so I replaced the battery with a new battery and a few days latter it died too. So, then I figured it must be the altenator not charging.

Well, today I put a new altenator on and still no charge. I have been told that there is a fuse between the atltenator and the starter called a "Megafuse" its 175amps and I probrably blew it. Would this keep my altenator from charging (i.e. open-circiut)? I don't know what it could be??? Where can I get this in-line "Megafuse" and how do I put it on a 95" Mercury Mystique GS 2.0L. PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE, HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. ok clip to engine main harness at rear of engine

there two big red wire on starter one from batt other to alt

in back of engine where fuse is

check if u have power at alt on red wire there  2    1 small red

    1 big red

on big one if u have power  fuse ok

    if not fuse 175  burnt

  2. you could have fried more than one fuse. in some charging systems you will find  a control side and  a charge back fuse. you should check all of the fuses to make sure that you did not blow any other fuses. that mega fuse is a possibility

  3. There is a mega-fuse for your vehicle.  It is located about 6 inches after the alternator output wire in a black plastic box bolted to the underside of the intake manifold.  It is serviceable separately and run about 30 dollars from Ford.

However, there is a slight possibility that the ECM is bad too, since there was a large short in the system.  Fuses don't blow instantly, its takes about 2 milliseconds for one to blow, during that time it could of spiked the ECM with enough current to damage it.

  4. Trace your alternator wires backwards and make sure none of them haven't burnt into!

    G-man.
