  1. Yeah! It went to the same place that the bird flu, spinach salmonella, and mad cow disease went- to bigger newer more important news like celebrity gossip.

  2. No there is still a Salmonella issue with tomatoes.

At this time, FDA is advising U.S. consumers to limit their tomato consumption to those that are not the likely source of this outbreak. These include cherry tomatoes; grape tomatoes; tomatoes sold with the vine still attached; tomatoes grown at home; and red plum, red Roma, and round red tomatoes from specific sources listed at: http://www.fda.gov/oc/opacom/hottopics/t... Consumers should be aware that raw tomatoes are often used in the preparation of fresh salsa, guacamole, and pico de gallo, are part of fillings for tortillas, and are used in many other dishes.

    Consumers everywhere are advised to:

Refrigerate within 2 hours or discard cut, peeled, or cooked tomatoes.

Avoid purchasing bruised or damaged tomatoes and discard any that appear spoiled.

Thoroughly wash all tomatoes under running water.

Keep tomatoes that will be consumed raw separate from raw meats, raw seafood, and raw produce items.

Wash cutting boards, dishes, utensils, and counter tops with hot water and soap when switching between types of food products.

  3. yes its safe.

  4. I didn't know the tomato spmthym / disease ever started.

  5. Actually, if you are concerned about salmonellosis, you shouldn't eat any tomatoes at all unless they are from your very own garden.  While tomatoes are indeed the top suspect no one is sure where the salmonella outbreak  is originating.  It could actually be contamination from warehouses where tomatoes are repacked after purchase by wholesalers making all tomatoes suspect.

I grow my own in the side yard, so I am not concerned.  You can easily grow your own in containers even.  If you really miss your 'maters, try picking up a few seedlings.  They're quite simple to raise and you end up with a better quality fruit than you would get at the market.

ETA: The information about the source of the outbreak being unclear was just released yesterday.  Read the source article down there.  It's interesting.

  6. no there is still the salmanela issue
