  1. You would need to add preservatives and biocides.  There are bacteria which can live on diesel fuel and turn it into organic mush that will clog your filters; you have to make sure they don't eat your fuel, and the constituents don't separate.  This may be very difficult; petroleum diesel has a relatively short shelf-life, and one reason the military wants to go to synthetic fuel is that it lasts years instead of months.

    I'd use metal barrels, but I'm old-school.
