Question:

DIY Plumbing: Up and over?

I'm running new supply lines to a bathroom and I have two options. I can either go through a brick wall and up through the floor, or I can go up, through the ceiling and back down.

Is it even allowed to run a supply line up over a wall and back down to the sink and toilet?

  1. Most direct route is usually the best, more joints mean more chances for leaks.

  2. go through the wall going up and over gives you a risk of air lock.

  3. If your running new water lines you can always go up and over if need be. If you are in a colder climate area do not run the lines anywhere near an exterior wall, you don't want the lines to freeze. Also insulating the hot line is always a plus, it will save on utilities down the road.

  4. I would just go straight through the brick wall. If you go up and down, you will have a lot more bends, and you will lose pressure because of it. Plus you use less pipe, saving you money.
