Question:

DIY bicycle maintenance for the laymen? GT Aggressor hasn't been ridden in 3 years, minor rust. Help! :-)

Hello! Due to the outrageous price of gas, I've decided to pull my bike out of its storage spot (next to the fence, under a tarp ... usually ... grrr ... I know, mistake number one) and start riding a bit more. I have a GT Aggressor purchased in 2005 which I now see has some minor rust on the cassette (no pitting, just surface) and some rust on the exposed parts of the brake cables. Please don't lecture me about leaving it out in the rain ... I won't ever do it again! I'm trying to do the right thing NOW, albeit too little too late, but does anyone have any thoughts on how to start from square one to get a bike back into shape for road action? What would your preliminary steps be if you bought a used bike? Where would you start? I don't have the money to take it to a shop and I'd much rather start to learn on my own ... clean up my own mess, if you will. Any tips, tricks, advice would be much appreciated!
