Question:

DIY boat paint or sealer?

I am planning on building a flat-bottom boat about 12ft.max. (http://www.vintageprojects.com/boats/jon-boat.pdf) to use on a private pond.

I wanted to know what I can use to paint, cover or seal the wood that is economical, easy to use and purchase.

And does anyone recommend this boat?

  1. for a few extra bucks the absolute best wood sealer is epoxy resin, and I just love the WEST brand....epoxy doesn't like sunlight so you'll have to paint over it but its worth it in the not so long run.....and if you don't want to use marine paint, porch and floor enamel works just fine

  2. go to a sherwin williams paint store and ask about there marine paint? It is pretty good and they will give you a pointer on the sealer also. some last up to 5 year out in the sun if you cover it up you will get longer use out of the paint! THE PRO'S KNOW!

  3. be sure and use marine plywood for rhe bottom. either fiberglass or marine grade bottom paint. higher cost at first but nothing else will last. with this system you can leave it in the water. good boat for a pond.
