Question:

DIY driveway---question about doing it yourself.?

My husband is very very handy and has done all the work on our house from building a shed, deck, putting up the pool, laying sod on our lawn, finishing the basement. The next big project is the driveway. We started looking into doing a unistone driveway. We started pricing it with companies to see how much we'd save. So far, companies are asking us 18K + to complete our driveway. Has anyone done a unistone driveway by themselves before? If so, wold you recommend hiring a company to excavate the area and then complete the work yourself? Or would you do the entire project by yourself?

  1. I'm a contractor and I sub all my concrete work out because it's really HARD work.

Not having the proper equipment to do it, or not having the experience to do a large job like this could mean disaster when the driveway breaks into cracked chunks of concrete.

18K is a lot of money, but IMO, a job like this is best left to the pros who do it every day.

  2. You can either rent an earthmover and do it yourself or pay someone for the excavation. Get a quote on the excavation alone and then compare it to the equipment rental fees for the days needed for your husband to do it alone and you'll find out what's cheaper.

This is a BIG job. Good luck!! : /
