I want to put all the wiring in my shed then get an electrician to come in and connect. The shed is in my back yard 10 metres from the house. I have divided it into a workshop and a games room. I was want to put in a circuit board with seperate breakers for the two areas. The game room will have computers, lights and possibly a small split airconditioner. The workshop will have lights, power tools and a 10 amp arc welder. What gauge wire do i need to power the shed from the metre box, what gauge wire will i need to run in the shed, what gauge wire do i need for the lights and do i need to run it through conduit because the shed it steel framed? I know the power has to be buried 600mm down in orange conduit. Any help or suggestion would be appretiated.

  1. lights go on a 14 wire......conduit yes...i would run a 50 amp or 100 amp service to the barn using # 4 wire....

  2. i dunno but ur shed sounds f%!#&ng sweet

  3. Unfortunately electrical is not something a homeowner has control over. When any service is changed such as this you have 2 options.

    1) do it bandit (yourself) and suffer any consequences.

    2) Pay an electrician to do it correctly.

Many time this requires a permit and inspection (USA)

    Good Luck

  4. There are many  variables to consider in the planning. I would call a pro and work with him or her, possibly they may let you bury the conduit, do some prep work, etc.

Being in HVAC for many years, I have a good understanding

of electrical. When I had a new service put in my old home, I hired a master electrician and paid the big bucks to get it done.

Could I have done it? h**l yes, but the attention to detail

demostrated by the pro I hired  was impressive  to say the least.

  5. your asking some very basic questions, which tells me you don't know squat about it. So if I was you I would not do anything until I at least knew how to check for ground.
