DIrect TV to new HDTV?

I just bought a new TV, and I want to get the best picture out of it with my current Direct TV box. We are planning on getting a HD box in a few months, but for now I am wondering the best way to set this up?

Upon reading on Direct TV’s site, they recommended using Svideo and Optical for the best picture and sound, and not using coaxial at all. Am I reading this right? That you don’t need to connect the TV to the Coaxial?

The only other jacks I have on the box are RCA. Out of the three, which one will give me the best picture?

  1. S-video with optical for the sound will be the best you can do for now. You don't need coax from the box to the tv but you'll still use the coax from the dish to the sat box. Once you get the new box, use hdmi.

  2. Coax still comes into each receiver and an HDMI cable runs from the receiver to the tv.  An HDMI cable is included in the box with the receiver - it is fine for the 1080i HD signal.

  3. true.. but that imformation is outdated.. use the HDMI cable instead for superior quality; much better than SVideo

  4. the site was right to tell you that the coaxial line is not the best. Out of the three, S-video with Optical cables are best (or even just the red/white audio cables), but most people don't notice the difference between that and RCA cables. Depends on your preference and how picky you are =)
