DJ Brigman finishes on a strong note at the News Sentinel Open Presented by Pilot
DJ Brigman birdied the final two holes on Sunday, to take the share of the second place in the News Sentinel Open Presented by Pilot, held at the Fox Den Country Club in Knoxville.
The 36-year-old American, who began with a shared 14th position, got off to a confident start and posted a birdie on the first hole. Another three birdies on the front nine allowed him to go four-under for the round.
The back nine of the course also witnessed him make a strong start, as he birdied two of the first three holes that he played. After sinking the seventh birdie of the day on the 15th hole, he was just two strokes shy of the pace set by Darron
Stiles.
However, he faltered on the 16th hole and suffered the only bogey of the day that hardened his chances to reach the top.
Afterwards, he needed at least an eagle to challenge Stiles in the playoffs. However, he only managed to post birdies on each of the final two holes, which were not enough to share the lead at the end of the four rounds in regulation.
Yet, he was happy with his overall performance in the round and the way he finished his campaign in Knoxville.
"I proud of myself for making birdie on 17 and 18, to give myself a chance," Brigman said with a smile. "I have been working on my wedge game on the wedge range at the University of New Mexico, I told myself trust all the hard work you've been doing and
you will be fine".
Scott Gardiner and Nicholas Thompson were the other two players who shared the second spot after posting 62 and 64, respectively.
Gardiner signed nine birdies in total and tied the course record. The highlight of his performance includes seven birdies on eight holes, starting from the ninth hole.
Meanwhile, Thompson was happy with the way he played in the tournament. He stated that his putting and ball striking was amazing throughout the week and he wanted to keep the momentum going into the rest of the season.
"I've made I think 20 birdies and an eagle this week," the 29-year-old noted. "I've played really good this year, just my putter has not clicked, but it clicked on the back nine today”.
