  1. Yes, you would have to replace the lamp between 2000-4000 hours.  That doesn't seem that long, but that is about every 2-3 years.  They cost between $400-$600 per lamp.  Plus, DLP has a narrow viewing angle, which means you have to be near the middle of the screen to see the image. In the long run, you are better off buying an LCD or plasma TV.

Unless you are looking for more than 60 inches, you should be looking at LCD or plasma.  Plasmas have better colors. and fast motion video.  LCDs are getting better with every generation, but I still choose plasmas over LCDs.

There are more LCDs than plasmas out there.  Therefore, the prices are getting more competitive.  Plasmas are still slightly cheaper.

  2. I had a DLP for 5 years and didnt need to replace lamp, actually still have it in another room but i was probably lucky it didnt go.Prices range from 150 upwards for lamps online depending on model etc.

But it depends on what you want from a tv,i bought a 50" samsung plasma 6 weeks ago but sold it to a friend 2 weeks later and bought a 46" samsung LCD after noticing heavy image retention on the plasma from playing my PS3.Although this is supposedly only temporary and goes away after a while i didnt want the hassle so i got the LCD.If you plan on alot of gaming or connecting a PC or laptop to your tv alot then dont get a plasma,go for LCD or DLP.If its mainly for tv,movies and sports then go plasma or DLP as picture quality on plasma at the moment still out performs LCD and are cheaper for bigger screen sizes. And DLP is out of the question if you want to hang the tv nicely on your wall, but if not

then you can get a nice big DLP with a great picture for a good price.Panasonic and Pioneer have the best reputation when it comes to plasma, for LCD Sony or the new high end range from samsung which i got.
