I recently discovered who my father is. Unfortunately he died recently. Is there a way to prove to his family I am his son? I mainly want to know medical background things to look out for, hereditary stuff.

  1. The great thing about DNA testing is you can not only prove who the parents are, but you can prove a family relationship.  If you have a half sibling willing to do it, you can take a DNA test that will prove you are related.

  2. yes. By DNA finger printing, all you need a very small amount  of his DNA.

you can also prove that by simple blood test, before getting to complicated  and costly ,specially if you know your mothers blood type.

  3. Agree with the person above me.

Unless he was cremated, you can still get a test done, even if you have no known or willing relatives of your father to give you a sample.

A woman once poisoned her husband to get his life insurance money, but wasn't smart enough to have him cremated.  DNA burns at a temperature much much much lower than those used to cremate a body.  Eventually, the man's sister was able to have his coffin exhumed.  He still had hair, which could be tested, even though this was years after his death.  They were able to prove that he had been poisoned that way.

So I mean, it'd be expensive and a long process, and might be upsetting for the family, but it is possible.  It'd probably be easier to prove it through a family member, but if that's not an option, you're not out of luck.

  4. Just as you are related to your father (50% of your genes came from him), you are also related to his family.  You should share ~25% of your genes with either of his parents or one of his siblings.  If both you and someone from his family take a DNA test, the results should prove that you are part of their family.

    Good luck
